Can't sleep. Never gonna sleep.

Started a new new piece today (the octopus) on handmade cotton paper and spending the night working on that as well as the salton sea piece (also on handmade cotton paper). It's 1:35am and I am exhausted but no hopes for sleep anytime soon. I think I may do a papermaking workshop in Tallahassee - especially using kudzu...it's invading our town!

This First Friday I am having a show with all my new work at a friend’s gallery space in Railroad Square. These are just sneak peaks of what I am working on. I have sooo much to do still! Hope to see all my friends there!

Oh and happy October! It has been so beautiful here in Tallahassee lately! I have been looking up (endlessly) bread recipes because I am going to do some serious baking this weekend! I want our whole home to smell like comfort, coffee, pumpkins, baked goods, fire, and friends.

the desert

I am going to miss being in the desert. I am going to miss being in the mountains and near the Pacific Ocean. In less than a week’s time I will be back three hours into the future and reflecting on my summer of 2011. These past few months have been some of the hardest, loneliest, best, and exciting of my life.
So, here’s to Florida and California and New York. Today I am writing out my six month plan because, yes, I am moving back to New York next year.
I can’t wait to look back on this time in my life and feel so amazingly smart and strong for it.

So much has happened since I last blogged however many hours ago!

Slowly but surely working on a new piece - experimenting with watercolor &coffee dyed handmade paper.

I packed up my bags yet again and now I am drifting in Hollywood until I fly back to Florida on the 20th. Tomorrow Gina and I are heading to Venice Beach to hang out with our artist friend Chris to sell clothes and art. I am trying to churn out some new pieces and also make some “business” cards to try &leave some sort of mark on Los Angeles before I bolt.

Things I look forward to:
-friends
-endless sleepovers
-kisses
-staying up all night in RR Square painting &sewing
-the cold?
-potlucks
-Tallahassee.

Packed the essentials. The move from New York to Los Angeles was, needless to say, exhausting. My body isn't sure what it is going to do after living over twenty years three hours ahead of the west coast.
I am staying with a friend from college for a few days before I move into my new Burbank home. He is an assistant to the CEO for a managerial company to directors and whomever else needs their life managed, I suppose. LA, right?
I am going to start a raw fast which will turn into a juice fast...
I need some clarity.
My body hurts.

with your arms outstretched to me!

If you come visit me we could lay in the ocean together. We could lay in my empty room while the sun floods into each crevice and washes our bodies with a warmth that is tinged with the cool air conditioning. I could be barefoot on the carpeted floor and tiptoe around your sleeping body. I would go into the kitchen with a soft smile on my face and pour us orange juice. I would make us toast with fig jam that was sent lovingly from Florida and creep back into my bedroom to see you have rolled over, now facing the window and its abundance of sunlight. I slowly lower what is in my tiny hands to the floor and get on my knees to crawl towards you. I could connect my body to yours, wrap my arms around you and hide my face in your back. I could be loved and you could be loved and we could be happy. Don’t you see what Los Angeles is? It is a dream and it is full of life and love and all the happiness we could ever hope for.

washbin

This is from a performance piece I did at 621 Gallery in April for the BA/BS graduation show. It is based on one of my favorite subjects (I am still learning a
great deal about): Existentialism. After reading Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being, I was greatly influenced by the character Teresa and her need to feel a weightlessness that was both physical and metaphysical. This was also me dealing with the fact that I was about to move from my home state of Florida (of 22/23 years) and move to New York. I needed a way to take everything and represent it in something tangible and literally remove it all from my being. I sat in a washbin and sewed an "intestine" which was all encompassing.
